For the third year in a row, The Sun has published an in-depth editorial about Maryland's role in the development and signing of the Declaration of Independence ("Charles Carroll of Carrollton: Maryland's First Citizen," July 4). This year, Andrew A. Green presented the life story of Charles Carroll who evolved from wealth and privilege to public service. Carroll was one of four Marylanders who signed the Declaration. As Mr. Green points out, Carroll had more to lose than most of the signers, all of whom mutually pledged their lives and fortunes. The 2014 and 2015 editorials on July 4 were equally as interesting in presenting Maryland's road to independence, and I see the author's hand in those works as well.
Whether presented in the classroom, on Broadway in "Hamilton," or on the editorial page, our history offers us guidance for today. Thanks and keep it going.
