Fathers can help, but what else is new?

Well, this was my first opportunity to read one ofRobert L. Ehrlich Jr.'s columns for The Sun. I expected to see an anti-Democratic rant, but instead what appeared was a lament over the fact that far too many young people are being raised by single parents, something that I suspect most of already knew ("The father factor," Feb. 19).

The implication left to the reader is that we need a new social program in order to try to improve this unfortunate condition. I say left to the reader because Mr. Ehrlich offers no ideas of his own.

Of course, the idea of a new social program being promoted by a Republican is laughable given that party's ongoing assault on social programs in general. So what, exactly, was the point, Mr. Ehrlich?
