Regarding your recent editorial on the environmental impact of farming, I have never heard such an out-and-out false statement verging on a lie ("Phosphorous rules delayed," Nov. 22). Farmers have done more over the past 30 years for water quality improvement than any other sector, and they have also invested more of their own money to do so.
Farmers are the best stewards of the land because if they don't take care of their land they won't be in business long. Taking care of the land relates directly to water quality improvement.
Check the nutrient management regulations. I would venture that farmers are allowed a certain amount of time to incorporate any manure applied to the land. Only if they don't should we call in the Maryland Department of Agriculture or the Maryland Department of the Environment for enforcement action.
