While I agree with Jay Hancock ("A bright energy future lighted by small changes," April 17) that conservation and the use of natural gas and LEDs is part of the solution to our energy needs — as well as the global warming problem — it is simply not enough.
The use of cleaner coal plants or so-called "clean coal, and fracking to obtain coal" as well as proposed nuclear plants, proposes environmental and health risks that are not acceptable. In fact we either pay now, or pay more later.
Wind power is a no-brainer, as is requiring all new homes to be built with tankless water heaters, all new large flat roofed buildings to be green and creating green roofs on government buildings —especially schools — wherever feasible.
While I realize that not everyone is able to pay the additional dollars on their utility bills needed to pay for wind turbines, many people would be willing to make the sacrifice. Perhaps a donation on the Maryland income tax forms right next to the Chesapeake Bay fund, would produce some of the capital needed.
