Rep. Donna Edwards' campaign is running a television ad saying she is "just like Senator Mikulski" ("Emily's List back in for Donna Edwards, as poll shows lead for Chris Van Hollen," April 21). Nothing could be further from the truth. The only thing she shares with Sen. Barbara Mikulski is her gender.
Unlike Ms. Edwards, Senator Mikulski is renowned for excellent constituent service. She is a doer, not just a talker. Working across the aisle with Republican counterparts, she has funded projects vital to Maryland, such as the Port of Baltimore and NASA, and has championed legislation benefiting women, children and health care.
Like Senator Mikulski, Rep. Chris Van Hollen knows politics is the art of compromise, a lesson Ms. Edwards hasn't learned. As a senator, he will "bring home the bacon" to our state in the Mikulski tradition. No wonder the African-American executives of Montgomery and Prince George's counties endorse him and most of the Congressional Black Caucus refuses to support Ms. Edwards.
Marylanders voting for Mr. Van Hollen will help elect an eminently qualified successor to Senator Mikulski.
