I loved your Earth Day commentary and would like to suggest one more easy way we can help the environment: Let's have "No Idle" zones ("A Maryland-style Earth Day pledge," April 21).
When we're waiting for the children at the bus stop, waiting for a friend outside a store or planning to drive a cold car in the winter the rule should be : Don't idle the car.
Our fresh air does not need any extra gas emissions, and newer cars don't need to be "warmed up" in order to run well.
Please turn off the engine while you wait (except at traffic lights, of course).
