Aid for students with dyslexia

Kudos to The Sun and Dr. E. Mark Mahone for bringing to light the lack of resources in our schools for students with dyslexia ("More resources needed for kids with dyslexia," June 30). Dyslexia is a hidden disability, and 10 percent to 15 percent of school children have some form of dyslexia. The International Dyslexia Association has been advocating for more resources for years.

Improving reading instruction across the board will not only help those with dyslexia but will also help all students thrive. When teachers are better prepared to teach reading, they can offer the right instruction and support to all learners. By changing standards to help dyslexic children in the school system, we can help all children reach their full potential.

Dyslexics are the out-of-the-box thinkers that our society needs to succeed. It's time to give these students the attention they deserve.
