The death of Muhammad Azam

As the Sun reported, the U.S. did indeed kill Mullah Akhtar Mansour in a drone strike ("Afghan Taliban report new leader appointed after Mansour's death," May 25).

But we didn't kill only the Taliban leader. The Hellfire missile that burned him up also incinerated Muhammad Azam, his noncombatant taxi driver. Mr. Azam worked for a taxi rental company.

Muhammad Azam — say his name — would never have been targeted along with Mr. Mansour if he'd been an innocent Westerner with a surname like "Smith."

Further, the Obama administration has made no attempt to justify deliberately taking the life of an innocent taxi driver along with his targeted fare. Mr. Azam's non-entity status in the administration's eyes was racist and his utter expendability was racist.

And both perfectly illustrate how racism — literally — kills.
