Redistricting won't address voter ignorance

The recent article by Michael Dresser ("Calls to redraw district lines," Feb. 16) places the spotlight on the need for redistricting reform but fails to point out what is really wrong. Although lawmakers can come up with a half-dozen blueprints for drawing different boundaries, none of the plans will work.

When most voters go to vote, they usually use the sample ballot sent by the Maryland State Board of Elections or The Baltimore Sun's endorsements as the basis for choosing candidates. In general, most voters have no clue with regard to the candidate's ideas or character. This is not exactly assurance for good government.

So what is the answer? Schools placing more emphasis on the role of government in our daily lives and candidates who are committed to being public servants instead of career politicians. Just call it the "Jaffe Movement."
