Republicans should stand their ground on shutdown, debt limit

For once, The Sun made me laugh out loud when its editorial board opined that "the House must reopen government and raise the debt limit, and then the two sides can negotiate a federal budget" ("Fund government, then negotiate," Oct. 7).

Oh really? At that point, what incentive would Democrats have for negotiating with the Republicans on anything?

The answer is "none." What's more, The Sun knows this perfectly well but it is trying (as always) to coerce readers into believing its disingenuous rhetoric against the Republicans.

The really sad part is that the Democrats don't care how long the government shutdown continues because they believe, wrongly, that they are "winning" this debate — as if this is some sort of game we are playing.

The best course of action Republicans can take at this point is to hold their ground. That is the only way taxpayers are going to see any real reform in our dysfunctional and dishonest government.
