I read with interest your recent article about O.J. Brigance's decision regarding how to deal with his tragic illness ("Raven O.J. Brigance joins emotional debate over 'death with dignity' bill," March 10).
But why would he and others not respect a different choice, that of giving those terminally ill patients who wish to die the right to end their suffering? It seems cruel not to, and it would in no way negatively affect them.
I hope the legislature and governor will take into account the Goucher College poll indicating that 60 percent of Maryland residents approve the aid in dying bill.
As for House Speaker Michael E. Busch, Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller and others who were quoted as wrestling with their faith, might I remind them that we do not live in a theocracy, that death with dignity should be a civil right and that they were not elected to be mullahs of the House and Senate.
