The only sensible explanation I can give for Peter Schmuck giving the Baltimore Orioles' Chris Davis a "B" for this past season is that he must have looked at the stats of Khris Davis of the Oakland A's ("Peter Schmuck's final 2016 grades for each Orioles player," Oct. 7).
Our Davis was absolutely awful, as he didn't even "hit his weight" (.221 versus, 235 pounds). His 219 strikeouts are third all-time for a Major League Baseball season. Many of his home runs were hit with the team already ahead or way behind, and he killed many a late rally by failing to produce with men on base and probably cost us a chance to win the division.
Good defense only goes so far for a player at a position where run production is the norm, especially when he is being paid $162 million for seven years. He gets a "D" from me at best.
