Joint custody can hide abuse [Letter]

I am in agreement with Joan Meier's letter regarding the overwhelming difficulties of joint custody for children ("Joint custody can be the wrong answer," Oct. 12).

One 5-year-old boy summed it up well. When asked where he lived, he answered sadly, "I don't live anywhere. I just visit my mom and visit my dad."

Under the fire of domestic violence, the joint custody two-step becomes a potential dance of death.

Battering and incestuous parents are working hard to promote this impossibly dangerous solution for spurious reasons of their own. Those reasons include eliminating child support obligations, punishing the victim spouse for leaving, and/or growing their own child sex abuse victims. The ultimate sacrificial lambs are the children murdered by battering parents.

Don't buy joint custody. It's a fatally flawed product
