Obama's nominee deserves a fair hearing

I voted for President Barack Obama twice, and he will not leave office until January, 2017. I expect him to submit a nomination for the seat vacated by Justice Antonin Scalia, and I expect the Senate to do its job and conduct the appropriate hearings ("GOP's no-hire court," Feb. 14).

Dysfunctional Republicans are doing their best to lower the standards of government in this country, as evidenced by the truly pathetic candidates they are considering for its highest office.

They have lowered political discourse to a level I had not witnessed in previous times. My only consolation is that it is pretty clear that the person nominated for the current vacancy on the Supreme Court will not be appointed by a Republican president.

The Republican party is becoming more marginalized by the minute. It simply lacks answers to the problems facing a modern electorate. I believe in the two-party system, but the Republicans appear to be so far adrift that it will take ages for them to make a national comeback.
