Episcopal Church still in denial about addiction

I can't help but laugh at the last sentence in today's well-written and informative article "Episcopal Church in 'denial' over addiction, leader says," (Feb. 12): "These are exactly the kinds of things Bishop [Eugene] Sutton has been saying," spokesman Dan Webster said.

I thought it was Bishop Sutton who originally insisted that Heather Cook's 2010 DUI was a "one-shot" thing, and the church was about "forgiveness and redemption" in rationalizing her election. It was also Bishop Sutton who sanctioned Ms. Cook's telling electors about the DUI herself (she didn't), rather than ensuring that they were so informed.

If the national church is really serious, it is Bishop Sutton who needs to go. Mr. Webster's remark suggests the church is still in denial.
