Bishops shirked their responsibility in Cook case

Why would anyone leave it up to the Suffragan Bishop Heather Cook to inform the Episcopal delegates that she is an alcoholic and had a DUI arrest in 2010 ("Head of Episcopal diocese tries to clarify comments on bishop's drinking," Feb. 5)?

Doesn't Bishop Eugene Sutton know that alcoholics are not reliable?

Now we learn that Ms. Cook may have been drunk during a dinner prior to her installation. According to a church timeline, Bishop Sutton, conveyed "concern to Presiding Bishop. Presiding Bishop indicates she will discuss with Cook. Cook consecrated."

Bishop Katharine Schori Is head of the National Episcopal Church. Both Mr. Sutton and Ms. Schori should be held accountable for this horrific tragedy.

Finally, why hasn't Ms. Cook resigned? She should be defrocked. I have been an Episcopalian all my life, and I am frustrated, saddened and disgusted by this episode. The responsibility lies with Mr. Sutton and Ms. Schori. Shame on them both.
