It's bizarre that the preservation of my freedoms should depend on imposing on me rules and traditions from an 1,800-year-old book that are largely alien to me.
I would think freedom is best preserved by imposing as few rules as possible on people while assuring that my freedoms don't infringe on those of others.
The emphasis by conservatives on religion — by definition a system that limits my personal choices based on someone else's beliefs — has always struck me as one of the most idiosyncratic aspects of American conservatism.
