Death of Bowie student is Army's loss

Rest in peace, Richard Collins III. Your death, allegedly at the hands of a white University of Maryland student, makes no sense ("Police, FBI investigating University of Maryland killing as possible hate crime," May 21). We shall miss the contribution you would have made to military intelligence.

I know that you got your commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army last Thursday and would have graduated from college Tuesday. As a former Army officer who loved his time at Fort Bragg, N.C., "the home of the Airborne," I want to share with you the words of my former platoon sergeant, "Airborne guys help the angels guide souls to heaven."

The death of Lt. Collins did not come at the hands of those who subvert a religion for terrorist reasons. He died at the hands of the great grandson of Polish immigrants. The beautiful mosaic needs some work.
