An environmental benefit of coal

I grew up in Cumberland in the late 1940s and '50s when most of the residents heated their homes with coal but some people do not know that ("Voters in West Virginia and Nebraska cast primary ballots," May 11). When we would clean out the ashes, we had 5-gallon metal cans and the ashes were picked up by the town and used in the winter on snow instead of salt.

We were recycling before all these politicians and tree huggers.
