Benghazi show trial

In a letter from Charlotte Eliopoulos, the same old accusations are made ("Clinton lied to the public," Oct. 26). According to her, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton lied about the identity of the attackers in the Benghazi attack. No, Secretary Clinton repeated what she was told by the intelligence agencies, and they got it wrong at first. This frequently happens in wartime. When they obtained video files from the attack, they changed their reportage. At that point, Secretary Clinton and the rest of the administration updated their description of the event. The hearing made this very clear.

My father told me this story from World War II. He was being briefed by an intelligence officer. The officer said, "The Germans are massing their forces near this little French village. They must think we are going to attack there. But we have no such plan." The little French village was Bastogne. No doubt the intelligence officer updated his story later.

As for security funding for the tiny Benghazi facility, the responsibility for the defense of that facility and the nearby CIA compound lay with the host country. Not every little outpost can be turned into an impregnable fortress. The Congress routinely cuts funding requests and the State Department must allocate the reduced funding among about 600 sites in many countries.

The Republicans made a huge mistake by continuing the hearings that by their own admission are designed to throw mud on her reputation. They are making the election of Hillary Clinton to be the next president more likely, not less, by continuing these foolish show trials.
