Is male circumcision also a human rights violation ("Masking the truth at the BMA," May 26)? Seventy-five percent of the men in the United States have been circumcised. Fortunately, fewer circumcisions are being performed every year.
Currently, only 40 percent of Americans are circumcised. But circumcision was once much more prevalent. I was circumcised in 1941 as were most of my male friends. In the 1970s, my sons were also circumcised. I was never asked. It never occurred to me at the time. They just did it.
Subsequently, I told my sons not to allow their sons to be circumcised. And fortunately, my grandsons are now part of that 60 percent of our population with their genitals still intact.
Today, our STD rates are as high as or higher than in countries where circumcision is rarely practiced. Furthermore, circumcision is painful and there are some medical risks. Why would we do this to our sons?
