Fix families, not schools

The article "Maryland state school board considering vouchers, charters for failing schools" (Dec. 18) missed the most important point about "failing schools." If one wants to know why our kids are not keeping up with the kids in other counties, I can answer you in one world, parents. If they fail the children, the children fail. Teachers cannot do the parent's job for society. However, we have no choice, as society must try to take up the slack that many single, teenage mothers living in destructive non-functioning families wrought upon their own children.

It is not schools that are failing, rather families that are failing. Charter schools will not change this.
