Schaller wrong about South Carolina

Thanks to Thomas F. Schaller for the Professor Howard Zinn version of history on the tragedy in Charleston, S.C. ("South Carolina's racist history," June 24).

Instead of really writing about that tragedy, he makes a pitch for another of his failed treatises. It's funny to see a professed socialist resort to capitalist methods to make a buck!

The left doesn't give a damn about those nine innocent souls who were killed in Charleston. This is another opportunity for them to push their political agenda and attack the Second Amendment.

By the way, Professor Schaller, there is nothing in the U.S. Constitution forbidding a state from seceding from the union. The problem occurs when seceding states attempt to take over federal property such as Fort Sumter.

And by the way, Mr. Schaller forgot to tell the rest of the story on Sen. Strom Thurmond. He started his political career as a Democrat. The Dixiecrats were the overwhelming majority of southern Democrats, elected and party officials who opposed desegregation. Abraham Lincoln was a Republican and his party supported desegregation in the late 1950's and early 1960's. Get your history right, professor!
