Based on the information to which the public has been made privy, the charges which State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby has leveled against the six police officers involving the death of Freddie Gray represent the worst of the criminal justice system in this country ("Six Baltimore officers charged in death of Freddie Gray," May 1). The sole purpose of bringing these charges was to bring a halt to the destruction of Baltimore by "thugs." A first-year law student would be able to figure out that there is no basis in law for these charges. At the best, there may have been negligent conduct, but this does not rise to the level of a criminal act which requires an intentional act. I predict that these charges will be summarily dismissed on a motion, or if denied, on appeal. These officers are literally being sacrificed on the altar of political expediency. How about indicting your mayor for not allowing the injured police officers to wear protective gear and ordering them to stand down while these peaceful demonstrators destroyed police cars, looted and burned down buildings. How many of these people have been charged with crimes?
