House tells the story of Md.'s 'first citizen'

I commend Sun Editorial Page Editor Andrew A. Green for his commentary on the significance of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, one of the four Maryland patriots who signed the Declaration of Independence ("Charles Carroll of Carrollton: Maryland's First Citizen," July 2).

Mr. Green correctly explains the issues that confronted the Carroll family and others in the Maryland province, and how Carrollton overcame those challenges with patience and intelligence.

His birthplace in Annapolis is open to the public free of charge from noon until 4 p.m. during the summer and by appointment. Mr. Green's commentary provides an excellent foundation for visitors, and our all-volunteer staff will be happy to tell the rest of the story.
