Hogan budget will hurt those in greatest need

I would disagree in part with your editorial "Hogan balances his budget on Baltimore's back," Jan 18).

Gov. Larry Hogan's proposal definitely aims to hurt Baltimore City school children and those hurt by the tragic events of last year. But his proposed budget plan doesn't stop there. It also aims to hurt Prince George's residents in desperate need of health care. It aims to hurt those who are guarding and caring for prisoners. And it aims to hurt those who carry out the day-to-day work of state government.

In other word it aims to hurt those who most need help and are least able to defend themselves against such cuts.

Last year the governor promised to help Baltimore City when the city's problems were in the national spotlight. This year when the spotlight is elsewhere, he takes that help away. This year he removes help for the disabled and their caregivers. The governor is not just balancing the budget on the back of Baltimore City. He is balancing it on the backs of all those who government is supposed to be working for but are less able to advocate for themselves.

His strategy is even more cynical than the one The Sun's editorial describes.
