An article on the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra players suggested that recently hired musicians may have been selected from applicant pools of lesser quality ("BSO musicians air frustrations over vacancies, more," March 9).
The quality of recent hires of the Baltimore Symphony is not in question. We are proud of all the musicians who sit on our stage. The committee apologizes to these members for being portrayed in an inadequate way.
We are also proud of our pool of extra musicians, who fill out the ranks and help maintain the high quality of the orchestra. Many of these musicians travel from orchestra to orchestra on a freelance basis to piece together their musical careers. They are underappreciated for their dedication and talent, and we wish to recognize them and thank them.
We also thank the leadership of our organization, from Board Chair Barbara Bozzuto, to Music Director Marin Alsop, to our dedicated staff, associates and loyal supporters.
We are a family, and our family turns 100 next year. It is a time of celebration. Please help us celebrate all of the talent that comprises the high caliber and prestige of the BSO.
