Shouldn't Md. already have been inspecting aging bridges?

The top transportation official in the state has ordered an immediate inspection of 27 aging bridges. This announcement comes after a slab of concrete from an I-495 overpass struck a car in Prince George's County ("Md. to inspect aging bridges," Feb. 13).

This information makes me very uneasy. I direct my angst toward the Department of Transportation. Shouldn't these various bridges already be on a stepped-up timetable for thorough inspections? I would like to think that the older bridges should take precedence in the pecking order of things, another significant factor being the daily traffic load for each bridge.

I suppose we as Maryland residents simply assume the various bridges and overpasses are already on a sufficient inspection schedule.

But we all know what happens when we assume.
