Baltimore will face its challenges

I love Baltimore. It is imperfect, challenged and historic. I love Baltimore. I did not spend my life here. I have been here less than a year. But in that time I've seen a city on the cutting edge, a city not afraid to take chances, a city of cultural breadth and depth, a city with one of the greatest academic research institutions in the world, a city where medical miracles are made, a city of friendship with a touch of southern charm. I love Baltimore.

Over the last few days, the world has seen a different Baltimore. We've seen a different Baltimore. We are ashamed and amazed. But we know better. We are better than our most recent moment. We are as great as the Star-Spangled Banner, as great as Fort McHenry and our beautiful Inner Harbor, as great as the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, The Baltimore Museum of Art, the Walters, Center Stage, Maryland Institute College of Art, the University of Maryland, Baltimore, the University of Baltimore, Morgan State University, the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins University.

We will face our challenges. We will look ourselves in the mirror. We will lift ourselves up and make ourselves better. Because we are Baltimore.
