How can you possibly blame GOP for Bergdahl treatment?

In regards to your editorial on Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl ("Hero or traitor?" March 26), I get the sense that, like all of your editorials, it amounts to your one favorite topic: "It's the Republicans fault."

But I feel everyone needs to be reminded who started this mess — President Barack Obama and not the Republicans. I am sure that President Obama's staff knew of the back story on Sergeant Bergdahl yet decided to present him as an American hero, ignoring the evidence that he had walked off and seemed to be looking for the enemy.

I blame Mr. Obama and figure he had his motives for making someone into a hero that wasn't which I see as a small misstep compared to the others the president has made in regards to terrorism, the Islamic faith as well our servicemen's lives.

While the editorial presents the charges made against Mr. Bergdahl as opinion, most of the media never challenged the president's assertions or treated as newsworthy the evidence of Mr. Bergdahl's desertion.

To me, when President Obama welcomed back Mr. Bergdahl, it was one of his more bizarre press conferences that I have witnessed. The sergeant disobeyed orders, and whether it was intentional or not, Mr. Bergdahl should have never been in a combat situation. It is a fact that six other servicemen died looking for him and many others were injured.

Perhaps Mr. Bergdahl should never have been celebrated as the hero they made him out to be and quietly discharged without pay because of his actions, but neither The Baltimore Sun nor myself is in charge.
