State Sen. Shirley Nathan-Pulliam spoke for all of us in the 44th District by voicing her alarm over the threat pesticides pose to bee colonies ("No bees? No food.," March 5).
Neonicotinoids, a heavily used pesticide that kills honey bees and disorders their behavior, also kills other pollinators. Some 50 percent of bees were lost by Maryland bee-keepers in 2012, and this poison also kills aquatic life.
All other activities that use neonics — landscaping, horticulture, etc. — can survive without neonicotinoids
But four out of five humans understand that we can not sustain our own lives so long as neonics put bees out of commission and our future on hold.
Lawmakers must pass the Pollinator Protection Act to ensure sustainability for bees — and for us as well.
