BDS needed to pressure Israel to do what's right

Lawmakers in Annapolis are considering legislation that would punish companies that take part in a boycott of Israel. (Michael Dresser, Baltimore Sun video)

Thank you for posting Rachel Roberts' strong op-ed ("Md. Anti-BDS bill stifles freedom," Feb. 14).

I am a Jewish Baltimorean who supports Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, following the lead of Palestinian organizations of people who have been suffering under occupation for 50 years. Ending the occupation is a pre-condition for real peace.

We are heartened by Seattle Seahawks player Michael Bennett and other NFL players who were supposed to go on a "Brand Israel" trip. In his words from Twitter, "When I do go to Israel  —  and I do plan to go  —  it will be to see not only Israel but also the West Bank and Gaza so I can see how the Palestinians, who have called this land home for thousands of years, live their lives."

Boycotts work to put non-violent pressure on governments for civil rights, and we will continue to work in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Israel and Palestine.
