Summer jobs for youth

I applaud Zeke Cohen's urging of "zero tolerance for youth unemployment" ("Rebuilding faith in Baltimore," June 4).

The Democratic nominee for City Council is right on target. However, he failed to mention all the foreign students imported by the State Department who take summer jobs each year.

The numbers are over 100,000 and these people are seasonally employed everywhere in the United States. It's time our government begins paying attention to American youth and find ways to match job seekers with employers who are hiring during the summer months.

I worked for two summers in high school and the experience was amazing. Not only did I earn money, I also learned appropriate business protocol.

We need to do something about this. It is unfair and counterproductive to import workers for the seasonal jobs so many kids in Baltimore covet.
