I was impressed but not surprised by Prince George's County Executive Rushern L. Baker III's recent commentary, "This is business friendly in Maryland" (Feb. 13). I was impressed because his piece was a breath of fresh air and in marked contrast to the rhetoric coming from our recently-elected governor. I am not surprised because before moving to Baltimore nine years ago, I lived in Prince George's County.
In my last years there, I read much that impressed me about the capabilities of the up-and-coming Mr. Baker. Gov. Larry Hogan, meet your opponent in your race for re-election in 2018. And I am betting that with a candidate like Mr. Baker, many more eligible Maryland voters will go to the polls than did this time around.
Contrary to statements in recent letters to The Sun, Governor Hogan was not elected by a majority of "eligible" voters. Some may think that a 52 percent approval rating, recently reported for Governor Hogan, is a positive. But 52 percent right after an election seems anything but comfortable for a newly-elected politician. I'm guessing that Maryland residents like the one quoted in The Sun on Feb. 12 who said this was not what he voted for will make the difference next time.
