Now that the Freddie Gray autopsy report has been released and the cause of death determined to be a "high energy impact injury," the officers that have been charged with various crimes including manslaughter can take a deep breath and feel free from guilt because they did not cause Freddie Gray's death ("Gray suffered single 'high-energy' impact," June 24).
Freddie Gray could have easily caused the injury described in the autopsy report by purposely hitting his head against the metal wall of the wagon's interior. Or he was drugged, and, not being able to control his movements, he either fell on the floor of the wagon and or went sliding against the metal wall. There are a lot of possibilities, and it's impossible to prove any of them.
To blame the driver for something that he had no control off is assinine. He was not driving a luxury limo on a perfectly straight road without pot holes of any other imperfections, he was driving a rough paddy wagon transporting prisoners and yes, the detainees in the back of the wagon are going to be bounced around the interior of the wagon which drives like a truck.
Criminal charges agaist the officers are hateful, frivolous and misguided. They will never stick. No jury anywhere will ever convict these police officers of the charges. The prosecutor jumped the gun for immediate fame purposes and in the process has destroyed the lives of six good police officers.
In the war aginst crime, there will always be imperfect actions that are not intentional or malicious. The streets of Baltimore and other inners cities are not newborn nurseries where gentle handling of babies is required.
Savage criminals on the street do not repond to loving care. State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby could learn a lot about the streets of Baltimore by riding along with a police officer patrolling the front lines. I would recommend that she wears an armored vest and be trained with a service weapon. Once in that patrol car, she must be prepared to die because the thugs don't care who she is and will shoot to kill her and then brag about the kill.
The six officers should have been praised for doing their job, not charged with fictitious crimes.
