I was disappointed that The Sun printed Patrick D. Hahn's commentary on the role antidepressants may have played in the crash of Germanwings Flight 9525 ("Antidepressants: a deadly treatment?" April 11).
There is nothing wrong with asking questions about possible adverse effects of medications, but we need to do so in a calm and scientific way.
There are plenty of studies showing that there is no link between antidepressants and violence. I recommend looking up articles through Google Scholar or through the National Library of Medicine. There are research studies that show these medicines actually have reduced the incidence of suicides.
What is most important is that there is close communication between doctors and patients. If a patient is having an adverse effect from a medication, he or she may need a different medication or the doctor may need to rethink the diagnosis.
People who are suffering from mood disorders need less fear-mongering and more communication and research into treatments and medications.
