Anthem overexposure

Playing national anthem before every sport event makes it seem less worthy, not more

I think I am as patriotic as the next guy, and I have the utmost reverence and respect for our national anthem. Having said that, do we really need to have the anthem played and sung before every baseball game, football game, basketball game, etc. ("Kaepernick and the inevitable intersection of sports, politics and the national anthem," Aug. 30)?

In my opinion, this overexposure of our sacred anthem actually waters down its grandeur and importance. Frankly, it blurs the line between patriotism and jingoism. Let's reserve this tradition for events of greater significance so that when we hear the anthem it will command the respect it deserves.
