Violence in 'American Sniper' serves a purpose; what about the rest of Hollywood's fare?

As one of my infrequent visits to a movie screening I went to see "American Sniper." A great picture and I agree with Chris Kyle's reasoning (and Sgt. York's) that "I did it to save lives." It bothered me though, that every one of the 20 minutes of previews before the feature were flash after flash of someone shooting or beating someone else, explosions, car collisions, guns and death by any means. Are there no more good movies that don't consist of someone running around with two hands on a pistol?

I am convinced and conclude that if Gladiator arenas were reestablished, they would be sold to capacity. (Perhaps that's an answer to the death penalty.)
