After reading about Amazon's hiring plans ("City to host application sessions for 1,000 Amazon jobs," Jan. 28), I am a bit perturbed by what Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake had to say. She said she wants to make sure the jobs go to city residents.
I'm sorry, but what about the rest of the taxpayers who live in this state who need jobs? Are they not also deserving of getting a job in order to take care of their families? Could this be considered discrimination, merely due to the fact that the applicants aren't "city residents?"
I say let anyone who is qualified to do the job get the job, regardless of where he or she lives. To me, that would seem the fair way to do it. I believe we also just went through this same thing for jobs at the Horseshoe Casino. People shouldn't be getting a job just because they are city residents. I was born in the city many years ago, and I think I deserve a chance at those jobs also. How about a little bit of diversity?
