Public schools exclude good teachers

The ACLU's Sara Love recently wrote that "public schools take all comers" ("Keep public funds out of private schools," April 8).

When it comes to faculty, a recent Calvert Institute study showed that public schools exclude 90 percent of qualified scientists and liberal arts graduates from the teaching force by requiring 27 credit hours of "methods" courses.

The best comment on this was by private school headmaster Horace Taft some 75 years ago:

"A normal school is an institution in which subnormal students are taught by abnormal teachers. No teacher can begin his career in a public school without taking a course which in the eyes of countless sensible men is largely a waste of time."
