I see that Baltimore County may add two more religious holidays to the school calendar — and once more working mothers will have to find someone to take care of their children on those days ("Baltimore County schools to continue study of religious holiday issue," Aug. 24).
However, I have what I believe is a solution that will solve a few problems. Why doesn't the school system give every child or family a two-day pass to celebrate whatever religious holidays they choose? Those who have no religious beliefs could use the passes as they pleased.
There would no questions asked. All a child would have to do is present their pass before they take off. The child would not be required to make up any test or homework.
This would shorten the school calendar, and people would not have to take off a day that means nothing to them.
Also, the school board would be able to set up a definite time for spring vacation — for example, the second or third week in April. Then families could plan their vacations.
There are a few problems though. What about Christmas? Do only the Christians get Christmas off? And would the winter vacation start the next day, or would it be included in the winter vacation?
I know a lot of families who celebrate Dec. 25 simply as a gift-giving day or Santa Claus day.
