Letter: Hunters best choice to control 'ever-eating deer herds'

Thank you for reporting the county's efforts to keep our ever-eating deer herds under control ("Deer hunts in county parks help cull herds," Feb. 9). Deer here in west county are gradually eliminating anything green and chewable between the ground and their "browse line," which is about 5 feet or so.

I think our local deer are stunningly beautiful, but I also believe we have to speak up for our many native plants that deer are eating to near extinction, and for the other animals that depend on those plants for survival, and for our gardens, landscapes, and woodlands.

I believe there must be a reasonable balance, and I prefer that human hunters do the balancing rather than wolves, mountain lions — or the fenders and hoods of our cars and trucks.
