TGI Fridays will open at Mondawmin Mall by the middle of the year, the mall announced Thursday.

The 7,000-square-foot restaurant and bar, to be located near Target,  will be the first Fridays in the city. Jackmont Hospitality Inc. will be the owner and operator.

"Mondawmin Mall has been an integral part of the Greater Mondawmin community for almost 60 years, and we are always pleased when we can create fresh shopping and dining options for our customers," Romaine Smallwood-Smoot, the mall's general manager, said in the announcement.

The mall was renovated and expanded in 2008. Last year, in a redevelopment of the former MVA building, the mall brought in a Ross Dress for Less and Deals stores.

"Over the past several years Mondawmin Mall has undergone a significant transformation, and is now home to dozens of national retailers," Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said in the announcement. "The addition of the city's first TGI Fridays alongside what was the city's first Target, demonstrates the mall's continued relevance to not only the surrounding community, but also the entire city."

The Friday's chain started in 1965 and has grown into a franchisor of more than 900 restaurants in 60 countries. Jackmont, an Atlanta-based minority-owned food service management company, is one of the chain's fastest growing franchisees.
