Deporting Jorge Garcia was heartless — and bad foreign policy

It’s heart-rending to hear the story of Jorge Garcia, the law-abiding Detroit-area husband and father who was separated from his family and deported to Mexico on Monday after living in the U.S. for nearly 30 years since arriving in our country when he was 10.

Many have commented on the callousness of this act, since there are other ways we can sanction undocumented immigrants without deporting them.

Beyond that, however, I am stunned that the federal government would demonstrate such callousness toward Mexico, a good neighbor to us. Our relations with other countries will wax and wane, grow warm and cold, but Mexico will always be our neighbor. That fact alone should motivate us to demonstrate abiding respect toward Mexico, her citizens, and our own citizens of Mexican ancestry.
