As a young progressive Democratic activist and a Baltimore voter, I would like to voice my support for Rep. Chris Van Hollen, a consistent champion for LGBT rights and better educational opportunities. I'm supporting him for U.S. Senate because he is a true public servant dedicated to getting results for young people throughout Maryland ("Edwards, Van Hollen battle over trade, Social Security in first televised debate," March 25).
With the help of leaders like Chris, my generation has spurred the gay rights movement to great victories. He was the first member of Maryland's Congressional delegation to support same-sex marriage. Chris has been fighting for LGBT equality since 2001 when it was politically unpopular, even among Democrats.
I'll also be graduating from college soon with a pretty typical amount of student debt. Unfortunately, a typical amount is now about $20,000. That's no way for young people to start their life, and Chris Van Hollen knows that. He took on corrupt Wall Street lenders who were using loopholes to take money out of the pockets of students and has continued to fight for legislation to decrease costs for public colleges while broadening payment options so that students can afford a higher education.
Chris Van Hollen has a proven record of being an effective legislator and an exceptional Democrat. On these issues, he has fought for me and young people in the U.S. House of Representatives. As a young progressive, I want him to do the same for us in the Senate.
