Though voters may have already decided who will serve as Baltimore's next mayor ("Pugh's team of rivals," April 30), the local, regional and national economies will heavily influence the new mayor's success in the next contests — the battle against crime, a housing shortage and unemployment.
Those antagonists are unlikely to show deference to the political party of the next mayor or the margin of victory in the general election, and voter enthusiasm is likely to wane quickly if the new mayor is unable to turn campaign promises into achievements.
Let's hope the new mayor is able to deliver on her campaign's promises without being distracted by local politics.
