Nous aimons Paris

On Sept. 11, 2001, a friend and I arrived in Paris, having driven from the small city of Beaune. We were enjoying our first vacation in that beautiful country. When we arrived, we noticed police near our hotel along the Champs-Élysées. We thought they were preparing for a parade or celebration.

Of course, as we checked into our hotel, we quickly learned why there was so much security.

We wanted to return home, but we could not as no planes were allowed in. Phone lines were all down. We had no communication, and all we could do was watch CNN. It took eight days before we could go home. And the French people became our family.

We visited the American embassy and found one of those memorials growing along the wall in front of the embassy. "I love NY" T-shirts, photos of Statue of Liberty, flowers, etc. While we took this in, a French woman came and asked if we were Americans. When we said yes, she handed us a rose and said "We love America."

To our friends in France, know that we send bouquets of love to you in your time of need.
