Former Mayor Sheila Dixon, who has led in polling but trails Pugh in fundraising, recently got a boost when business leaders held a fundraiser for her at developer John Paterakis Sr.'s Marriott Waterfont Hotel in Harbor East.

The Paterakis family — one of Baltimore's biggest players in local elections — had been sitting out the race.

"Sheila Dixon has strong grass roots support across the city that's growing every day," said Martha McKenna, Dixon's campaign spokeswoman.

The $155 million hotel where the fundraiser took place pays just $1 a year in property taxes under a deal cut with city officials.
