CNN political commentator Van Jones called President Trump's comment last week about African nations the “definition of racism” in a discussion Sunday on “Reliable Sources” with host Brian Stelter and me.

Jones’ analysis is one of the clearest and most focused I heard amid the tidal wave of words set off by what the president said.

Press performance in covering the story of Trump’s words was also discussed in our segment.

I was part of two other segments on “Reliable Sources” Sunday, both with Lynn Sweet, columnist and Washington bureau chief for The Chicago Sun-Times.

One was on the powerful speech by Oprah Winfrey at last week’s Golden Globes and the presidential speculation that followed. The other was labeled “Trump’s stable genius tour” by the producers on “Reliable Sources.”

I love that frame for the optics and rhetoric Trump generated last week in an effort to counter descriptions of him in Michael Wolff’s “Fire and Fury.”

You can see video of those segments here and here.
