When Billy Bush was named host of the third hour of "Today" last summer I thought this is what you get when you put show business values totally over news the way NBC has done time and again.

And no one in TV, not even Fox News, has done it as often or egregiously as NBC. Remember the mistake the network made last month in having presenter-show host Matt Lauer instead of a journalist like Chuck Todd moderate NBC's phony "Commander-in-Chief Forum"?

But words like egregious have no meaning when you are trying to describe the depraved, misogynistic conversation about women that Bush engaged in with Donald Trump 11 years ago in a bus on the way to a taping on a Hollywood soundstage. This is in a league of ignorance, male arrogance, insensitivity and bully-boy cruelty by itself.

I don't need to replay any of it here. Hopefully, everyone on the planet has given it a listen and decided what kind of people both Bush and Trump are.

As vile as Trump's words and actions are on this tape, Bush sinks to what is perhaps even a lower level as he essentially pimps for the businessman by encouraging a woman whom the two have been discussing in graphic sexual terms to give Trump a hug.

Actually pimp would be a step up for the way Bush talks and behaves on this tape.

As a journalist who believes in legacy values of impartiality and fairness, I can't tell you what I think of Trump as a presidential candidate.

But as media critic, I can and will say that if NBC wants to have any credibility or trust with viewers, especially the millions of women who watch "Today," it needs to act fast and suspend Bush immediately - and then get the lawyers to figure out the best way to fire him for good.

I always thought he was a worm – the embodiment of some of the worst values of Hollywood. But with this tape, he should be officially dead meat.

His statement is the statement of a worm.

"Obviously, I'm embarrassed and ashamed," he said in a statement after the tape surfaced. "It's no excuse, but this happened 11 years ago – I was younger, less mature and acted foolishly in playing along."

You weren't playing along, Billy, you were sucking up by putting women down. You were egging this narcissistic fool on with your lackey-boy-you-go-big-Donald locker-room crap.

And spare me the 11 years ago talk. You weren't some ignorant kid starting college. You were 33 years old 11 years ago – more than old enough to know lots better, and old enough that what we see on that tape is more likely your core character than the weasel words of semi-apology you are offering.

The fact that there are NBC News "insiders" today saying Bush will not be punished severely because he's the heir to Lauer's throne only offers more evidence of how sick the NBC News culture is.

And I mean sick – right up there with Fox News in its owns twisted way. I wonder if there are any employees at NBC who will show the kind of courage Gretchen Carlson and some of the other women at Fox News did when they took on the sexually abusive culture established by former CEO Roger Ailes.

I had about 30 seconds of hesitation in saying NBC News needed to fire Brian Williams immediately as managing editor and anchor of "Nightly News" in 2015 when it was revealed that he lied about his combat coverage and tried to falsely appropriate the honor many Americans died for.

I don't have three seconds of hesitation in saying NBC needs to fire Bush and make it clear to women viewers that it knows how sick and depraved the words and actions of Bush are.
